Commercial Data Cabling: Promoting Efficient Maintenance and Management

Blog

Proper cable management and maintenance are crucial for the long-term reliability of your commercial data centre. Therefore, if you are planning on installing new cabling infrastructure in your building, you must ensure that the cables are well-structured. Without good structure and organisation, it will be difficult to conduct regular upkeep. In addition, you will not be able to detect the source of a problem in your data centre and resolve it efficiently.

Here are simple tips for ensuring that your data centre allows for efficient maintenance of data cabling.

Design Your Room Carefully

You should design your data centre to ensure the efficient running of your commercial cabling. Often, it is difficult to keep the data centre organised because the room is not optimised for cabling installation. For instance, if you do not have enough racks or they are not placed properly, you will be forced to leave a lot of conduits on the floor or even attach them to walls and ceilings. Therefore, you should design your data centre with your cabling needs in mind. Determine the number of racks that you will need to accommodate all the cabling and accessories. Also, choose the best configurations for placing the racks and running the cables for a neat and organised room.

Consider Cable Length

It is important to manage the cable length in your data centre with diligence and caution. In simple terms, you must not cut your cables until you confirm that the length is optimal. If you cut the conduits and the length is too short, the connections will be susceptible to disconnection. Without some slack, a little movement will cause the cables to detach. This could lead to unnecessary downtime. On the other hand, you cannot afford to have too much slack when installing your cabling. If the cables are too long, you will most likely end up with a tangled mess on the floor, compromising your maintenance and organisation efforts. You should also remember that the extra cabling length can add up to a lot of avoidable costs.

Plan on Cable Labelling

Finally, you should plan on creating labels for your cables. One of the common challenges in data centre maintenance and repairs is recognising the source of the problem when a malfunction occurs. If your cables are adequately labelled, you will only need to identify the conduit corresponding with the malfunctioning computer element. For the best results, ensure that the cables have labels on both ends, and create markers for all conduits, including patches and short runs.

Making Technology Work for You to Improve Your Life

Hi, my name is Andi. Whenever I hear people complaining how "bad" screens are or how technology has "changed" life too much, I have to laugh. Those attitudes are so similar to the same attitudes people had when Gutenberg invented the printing press. Now, however, books are on a huge pedestal, and in my opinion, in several hundred years, we'll probably see technology in the same positive light as we see paper books. I, however, aim to see technology in a positive light now. I want to share those thoughts and be one of the world's positive voices on the topic of technology. To do that, I have created this blog. It focuses on how to make technology work for you and how to let it improve your life. I hope you find my posts interesting, informative and inspiring.
